Presenter: Dr. Jarvis R. Givens
Join us for a timely and engaging conversation with Dr. Jarvis R. Givens centered on his forthcoming book, I’ll Make Me a World: The 100-Year Journey of Black History Month.
In I’ll Make Me a World, Dr. Jarvis R. Givens reflects on the origins, evolution, and future of Black History Month on its centennial anniversary. Tracing its beginnings in 1926 as “Negro History Week” to its contested place today, the book examines Black history as a liberatory tradition and considers what is at stake in preserving and teaching it at a time when the teaching and public understanding of Black history face increasing challenges.
Dr. Givens is also the author of Fugitive Pedagogy: Carter G. Woodson and the Art of Black Teaching, which reshaped understanding of Black educational traditions and their role in the Black freedom struggle.
Black History Month Keynote Program sponsored by the African American Historical Society of Rockland.
